My favorite writing material as a growing child is the back of a banana leaf and my writing pen is a barbecue stick. There I wrote my first ABCs, my first "I love you mama and papa" letters, and my first numbers.
Unbeknownst to my parents, I've been learning to write even before they took notice and bought my first paper and pencil. I often ran out of paper and my pencils stolen by other kids so I keep going back to banana leaf and barbecue stick.
When I read about James Lovegrove Marlin's "Banana Leaf" Letter from Cuba back in 1898, I remembered my childhood years spent writing on banana leaves.
